My Practice

Professor Simon Richard Myers Phd, FRCS [Plast]

Previous Post

My first Consultant appointment was as Clinical Director and sole Consultant for the only burn service in London sometime following a less than ideal relocation of services.

I count the following among my successes:

  • maintained an open service following appointment

  • Increased the burn consultant body

  • managed an MRA outbreak

  • Achieved Centre designation for the service in the National designation process [visitor/assessor NW burn services]

  • Relocated high activity satellite burn dressing clinic within new community hospital

  • Established collaboration with Children’s Fire & Burn Trust [CFBT], The London Fire Brigade [LFB], and my hospital Trust aimed at burn prevention strategies

  • Involved in International humanitarian ventures

  • Raised the profile of burn care within the Trust, and engaged in service development

  • Established a burn service research and development framework

  • Maintained and developed a paperless burn service EPR

Career Development

My previous post was professionally extraordinarily satisfying at a clinical level. I have worked with a highly committed multidisciplinary team in less than ideal circumstances, and with them have achieved significant and measured change aimed at maintaining and improving burn patient care in Central London. The pressures of acute burn care and reconstruction, however, left little opportunity for managing other clinical challenges within Plastic Surgery, nor for satisfying my personal ambition to fundamentally change patient care by the appropriate translation of basic scientific research through sound clinical study into improved clinical outcome.

The local Academic Health Sciences Centre initiative is an exciting development, within which I am keen to see the Medicine & Surgery Clinical Academic Unit flourish.

  • e-learning Fellowship, Queen Mary College, University of London, 2006

Income Generation

I have submitted major grants to the Healing Foundation for the National chair in burn care [unsuccessful, but still unappointed], and to Framework 7 [again unsuccessful]. My present income generation comes from the postgraduate courses I direct. I have recently submitted two major bids to the London Deanery to support a microvascular simulator hub at Whitechapel, and to develop delivery of National surgical curricula on-line.

Service Development

I wrote the Plastic Surgery component of the Cutaneous Medicine & Surgery CAU application, and applied to direct the CAU. I am engaged with the Trust strategy director and the Shriner’s charity in developing burn services within the PFI build.

Innovation & Enterprise

I have written a business case for an HTA-approved clean room facility within the ICMS, and this initiative continues to progress. I continue to develop novel approaches to keratinocyte delivery.
